A hidden gem – Wellington’s South Coast

You haven’t seen Wellington if you haven’t seen its southern coastline, difficult to access without a car. Enjoy a 3.5 hours private guided scenic tour of Wellington’s picturesque South Coast. We will drive along pristine beaches, watch ferries to and from the South Island; you might even see dolphins and pick your own Paua shell.

We’ll meet at Silke’s beachhouse, to get an idea of the areas from up the hill. It’s easy to get there by public bus from the centre of Wellington, with the bus stop right in front of the house. We’ll then take off from Te Kopahou Visitor Centre, with views of the South Island, and for a dive into Wellington’s South Coast history, wildlife and Fault system.

We then head towards Lyall Bay for a coffee via a Moai statue from Easter Island and then continue our drive around the Miramar Peninsula. We’ll stop at three historic places:

  • a WWI Gallipoli Anzac memorial
  • a well positioned natural feature that Maori built in the 17th century and that later became the main battery defending Wellington from seaborne attacks during WWII
  • and a monument to the people who lost their lives from the sinking of the Inter Island Ferry Wahine.

We then stop for fotos at the Wellywood sign and head onto the suburb of Miramar, home of NZ’s movie industry and the magnificent Massey Memorial.

You can either finish your tour at the famous Weta Cave and Workshop (book your own ticket), or end the waterfront journey back into town around the bays, where Silke will drop you off at Te Papa Museum.

During the tour, you’ll of course receive lots of tips for your ongoing NZ travels, insights into NZ culture through Silke’s intercultural lens, and anecdotes from her life in New Zealand. By the way, have you already found her intercultural book about New Zealand? If not, you can find it here: “New Zealand – My Adopted Home“.
